Each registered household is mailed a packet of offertory envelopes every two months. There are envelopes designated for each Sunday, any holy days of obligation, and special collections. These are placed in the baskets passed through the assembly at Mass on Sundays and holy days. These gifts are also recorded in the parish register each week, so that an accurate record of your generosity is provided in a timely manner each year for tax purposes.
More than responsible stewardship and a means of keeping good records… to many of the faithful, the envelope serves as something of a sacramental – an outward visible sign of love and trust. But it’s also a way of indicating our presence… it may not be much that I’m able to put in the envelope – but I was there out of love for the Lord! More practically speaking, participation in catechetical programs and sacramental preparation call for regular attendance at Mass… actually, attendance at Mass each Sunday and holy day is an obligation binding on all Catholics. But regular envelope use, no matter what the gift, is the only manner of determining one’s regular attendance at Mass.
